I recently visited the vast and impressive backstage and prep areas at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Giant studios for woodwork, metal work, costume fabrication and storage, wig-making, etc. Four or five levels below the level of the stage with all that and more. It's incredible what goes on down there.
